Um, When the Hell Will They Release "Pen15" Season 2 Part 2?

Vendy Wiccany, we ask you to deliver those eps!

If you’ve already binge-watched the latest batch of Pen15 episodes on Stan (or Hulu in the US), you have no doubt a) cringe-laughed until you were sick, b) cried actual litres of tears and c) been outraged by the fact that there were only seven eps to savour in Season 2.

If you don’t even know what we’re talking about, just watch this:

It’s good stuff! So, what gives? Why cut it short? Season 1 of Pen15 was ten eps long, so (*does basic maths*) we have basically been denied an hour of stars Anna Konkle and Maya Erskine doing this:

Well, like almost everything terrible about 2020, you can blame this one on the coronavirus too.

Co-creators Konkle and Erskine—who play slightly fictionalised versions of their 13-year-old selves in the show opposite real pre-teens—told the LA Times that production was shuttered in March as a result of the pandemic. This mean the season had to be split in two, with the completed seven episodes released now, and the rest unveiled at a later date.

But here’s the good news: Pen15 was renewed for 14 episodes back in 2019, so there are actually a full seven episodes coming soon, and not just the additional three we felt we were owed.

Clearly, our witchy incantations demanding more eps worked a little too well.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that "Opening Night", the seventh episode of Season 2, was actually a finale, given how it features the climactic production of Maya and Anna’s school play, not to mention a wrap party that fits in a Goodfellas parody and sees numerous relationships (Maya and Gabe, Maya and Sam, Anna and her mum, Anna and Steve) shift in brand new ways. It is also, as of this writing, the best rated ep of Pen15 on IMDB. We’d get it if that were the last we ever saw of the girls (given the show hasn’t been renewed for S3 yet).

We wouldn’t like it, but we’d get it.

However, the melancholy, open-ended conclusion to "Opening Night" is simply the precursor to seven more future episodes. Believe me, we’re not complaining. Hopefully, we will also see the return of manipulative third wheel Maura, and find out, uhh, whatever was going on with her.

According to Slashfilm, the back-half of Season 2 will land sometime in 2021, though, this will depend on when shooting can resume, given they have one more episode to complete.

We’ll be waiting.

Pen15 is now available to stream on Stan in Australia and Hulu in the US.
