When Is "Seinfeld" Coming to Netflix in Australia?

Netflix fought hard for the "show about nothing".

It’s time to practise your best stand-up comedian impersonations, because Netflix has officially won the rights to all 180 episodes of Seinfeld.

However, you can’t get your best binge-watching clothes out just yet, because it looks like our friend Jerry won’t be landing on Netflix until 2021. Yes, that’s ages away, but Jerry and the gang are well worth the wait.

If you haven’t got around to watching the timeless comedy, it follows stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld and his New York City friends, Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), George (Jason Alexander) and Kramer (Michael Richards).

Although it has been infamously dubbed a "show about nothing", Jerry Seinfeld told The Hollywood Reporter that the program was "a snapshot of what it was like to be a New York comic in the years before the turn of the century".

The rights to the show were not simply handed over that easily though. NBCUniversal recently paid $US500 million over five years to obtain The Office, and WarnerMedia is paying $US425 million over a five-year period to stream Friends on HBO Max. But according to the Los Angeles Times, Netflix paid "far more" for the rights to stream Seinfeld. That is a whole lot of moolah.

As per the Los Angeles Times, Netflix fought hard for the long-running comedy series, topping bids from Hulu, Amazon, WarnerMedia, NBCUniversal and Viacom. (The distributor of the show, Sony Pictures Television, currently has a deal with Walt Disney Co’s Hulu until 2021.) Considering the streaming giant recently lost the streaming rights to The Office and Friends in the States, this gives them something to do a happy dance about. (Stan has both The Office and Friends in Australia.)

Netflix has obtained global rights to the show, so it’s probably safe to assume that it will be available to stream in Australia. However, local reps could not officially confirm or deny if and when it will be heading down under.

Well, 2021 couldn’t come any sooner. Until then, no Seinfeld for you.
