What Would Stage 4 Coronavirus Restrictions Look Like in Victoria?

Tougher restrictions could be imposed.

With the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Victoria continuing to rise, Premier Daniel Andrews has warned that stricter restrictions could be introduced if the situation doesn't improve.

At the moment, Stage 3 lockdown restrictions are in place for the greater Melbourne Metropolitan area and Mitchell Shire.

Under Stage 3 restrictions, people have been asked to stay home unless they're shopping for essential items, caregiving, exercising or going to work or education (if it can't be conducted at home).

However, during a press conference earlier this week, Premier Andrews announced it's possible that further restrictions will be introduced.

"I can't rule out we have further limits placed on people's movement. I can't rule that out," he said.

"If you don't want a Stage 4, if you don't want the lockdown to last a moment longer, then please follow the rules. Do the right thing by your family, your community, and every family."

Premier Andrews' comments resulted in "Stage 4" trending on social media.

Except, what would Stage 4 restrictions look like if they were imposed in Victoria?

While Premier Andrews hasn't explained exactly what Stage 4 restrictions would entail, Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said, "We would do the minimum required because we know how much of an imposition it is on businesses and people's lives. But if it's required to reduce transmission, then it has to be in play."

Other countries like New Zealand have previously imposed Level 4 restrictions, which included the closure of schools and other educational facilities. On top of that, all businesses except essential services like supermarkets, pharmacies, and medical clinics had to shut as well.

People were also instructed to stay at home and travel was severely limited.

It's possible that Stage 4 restrictions in Victoria could look similar to the Level 4 restrictions seen in New Zealand.

Over the weekend, people in Victoria were advised to wear masks in places where they are unable to socially distance, like the supermarket.

As reported by the ABC, University of New South Wales epidemiologist Mary-Louise McLaws said wearing masks should be made mandatory.

Professor Sutton said any consideration about what Stage 4 might look like would be based on epidemiology. Plus, the restrictions could even target specific postcodes.

"If we're seeing a focus in a particular setting, in a particular cohort of people, in relation to particular activities, that would be the focus of a Stage 4 restriction," he said.

On the other hand, Health Minister Greg Hunt holds ramping up restrictions should be avoided, if possible.

"We know this level has enormous human and economic consequences," he said.

It's important to note that no Stage 4 restrictions have been confirmed yet. So, make sure you continue to practice good hygiene at all times and maintain social distancing.
