UNSW Responds To Latest Anonymous Threat; Classes To Continue As Normal

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) has contacted staff and students this morning following a new anonymous threat made overnight.

Yesterday, NSW Police advised that the general security threat at UNSW’s Kensington campus had been downgraded following an investigation of a disturbing post published on 4chan last weekend.

However, today’s update from the Sydney uni indicates that NSW Police are now investigating the source of this latest general threat, also published on 4chan.

"UNSW is one of a number of institutions mentioned in a new threat made online overnight," the email to staff and students begins.

“The threat… is similar to those made against UNSW and other universities in Australia, NZ and Sweden in recent days,” it continues, alluding to the threat made against University of Tasmania (UTAS) yesterday (which was deemed to be not credible by Tasmania Police).

Neither UNSW nor UTAS was closed on account of the threats. Today, classes are operating as normal at UNSW, though NSW Police will maintain a presence on campus.

Sweden’s Lund University closed on Monday when a threat was made via the student communication app Jodel.

Last week, a 4chan threat against New Zealand’s Otago University was also investigated by local police. Otago nonetheless remained open for classes.

More news as it develops.
