Police Say Threat Made Against University Of Tasmania Isn't Credible

The University of Tasmania (UTAS) today issued a general security alert after receiving an anonymous threat via 4chan, one day after a similar threat was made against the University of New South Wales.

Tasmania Police has since informed the university that the threat is not a credible one and that students and staff “should go about their business today.”

“As a result of analysing the threat, in conjunction with other jurisdictions, we can advise we do not consider the threat to be genuine and does not pose a risk to staff and students,” said Commander Glenn Frame.

“As the safety of the community, students and staff is a priority, we had deployed police resources to UTAS campuses as a precaution and for reassurance while an assessment was undertaken. Those resources will now be withdrawn,” he added.

The University of New South Wales also updated its staff and students this morning, letting them know that the investigation continues and there will be an increased police and security presence on campus. However, “classes will run as normal and students are expected to attend.”
