Twitter Might Abandon 140-Character Limit, Open Up Brave New Possibilities For "Mean Tweets"

Fav for innovation. RT for tradition.

In June – perhaps inspired by David Hasselhoff, if I may make a 26-year-old reference - Twitter tore down the 140-character wall of their direct messages.

Now, according to tech website Re/code, the company is looking to introduce a new product that will do away with the public 140-character limit too.

It’s not yet known what form the product will take – and how it will integrate with Twitter exactly – but the goal is clear: to allow users to publish more content to the service.

As part of their tinkering, Twitter execs have discussed removing user handles and URLs from the character count (which would be a continuation of their ‘retweet with comment’ option, unveiled in April).

CEO Dick Costolo resigned back in June, following criticism over Twitter’s inability to adapt.

Seems like interim CEO Jack Dorsey is keen to avoid that same guillotine.

One thing's certain: Jimmy Kimmel will be happy about this. His "Mean Tweets" segment is probably going to explode when the limit is taken down. Celebrities, take shelter.

Will a longer character-limit encourage new users to join Twitter, or is that precisely the feature that separates Twitter from the rest of the social media pack?
