The Latest Version of ChatGPT, ‘GPT-4’ Has Launched – So What’s New?

The Duolingo bird just got a whole lot more powerful.

The popularity and development of AI  - particularly since the launch and buzz of Chat GPT-3 – has only been getting higher and higher.

Today Chat GPT-4 launched, and is now available to OpenAI’s paying users of ChatGPT Plus.

But it turns out that GPT-4 has been hiding in plain sight this whole time – through Bing Chat.

If you’ve used the new Bing preview in the last five weeks, you’ve been using GPT-4. Very sneaky.

So what’s new about this latest version?

Of course there are general improvements we assume to expect.

OpenAI boasts that it's more creative, can provide greater context by handling over 25,000 words of text, scores higher in a uniform bar exam (compared to ChatGPT-3), and is a lot safer for users in its response to ‘disallowed’ content.

One of the newest additions is that GPT-4 can now accept and interpret images as well as text.

Right now, it’s being tested by one of their partners - Be My Eyes, a company that ‘endeavours to make the world more accessible for people who are blind or have low vision’.

They’re working with OpenAI and testing a new tool called Virtual Volunteer, that allows users to send images to their app.

The AI can provide assistance in many different ways. It goes further than just identifying elements in an image.

Be My Eyes provided an example – if you send a pic inside your fridge, the Virtual Volunteer would be able to identify what’s inside and analyse what you can prepare with the ingredients.

But wait - there’s more.

Virtual Volunteer can also provide appropriate recipes and give you a run-down on how to make them.

Be My Eyes is only one of the many partners of OpenAI – Duolingo being one of them.

That’s right – the ever-persistent green bird Duo can now help you learn a new language even better with the help of AI.

A new subscription tier called Duolingo Max has two new features powered by GPT-4.

The Role Play feature will allow you to engage in conversation with AI, and Explain my Answer can help clarify and break down rules when you make a mistake.

Lead Duolingo engineer Bill Peterson explained that ‘GPT-4 gives [them] far more confidence in the accuracy of AI responses in Explain my Answer’.

Duolingo Max is available to users today, and you can get the GPT-4 experience with these new features when learning Spanish and French (with plans to add more languages and features in the future!).

This all sounds pretty amazing, but what about the robot uprising?

Nah, we’re only joking (or are we? 👀). However, the rise of AI capabilities has sparked a concern for a number of people and companies, such as unis deciding to ban ChatGPT to prevent cheating.

Even Elon Musk himself is feeling a little worried.

Isn't this the same dude who is working on Neuralink – a company that wants to have humans communicate directly with machines using their brain?

Ok Musk – we’re sure that tech won’t leave us worried either.  👀

How are you feeling about the way AI is developing?

We don’t know whether we’re more excited, scared, or both.
