"Heathers" Reboot Has Been Totally Canned Due to Recent School Shootings

The Heathers reboot is gone for now.

Greetings and salutations, 2018's reimagination of the cult classic Heathers has been dropped by its network with its future in doubt.

While the production has already been wrapped up for a few months and the writers have already begun work on the next season, The Hollywood Reporter (THR) has reported that the show will not premiere on any Viacom-owned network.

Paramount Network's president of development and production, Keith Cox, told THR that the show touches on issues of a sensitive nature

"This is a high school show, we're blowing up the school, there are guns in the school, it's a satire and there are moments of teachers having guns. It's hitting on so many hot topics," Cox said.

"This company can't be speaking out of both sides of its mouth, saying the youth movement is important for us and we've done all these wonderful things to support that and at the same time, we're putting on a show that we're not comfortable with."

Earlier this year, Paramount stated that the show was delayed due to Parkland shootings, but would still air later this year.

"While we stand firmly behind the show, in light of the recent tragic events in Florida and out of respect for the victims, their families and loved ones, we feel the right thing to do is delay the premiere until later this year," Paramount said in a statement.

While the show won't be picked up by any Viacom-owned company, it is still being shopped around to other networks so there is still a chance that it will be released at a later date.

Student Edge has reached out to SBS who confirmed that they do not have any broadcast plans confirmed at this stage. SBS had originally intended to air the first season just hours after its U.S. premiere.

But let's be honest, even if it does see the light of day, it was never going to compare with the original.
