The Chats’ Matt Boggis Tells Us What You Can Expect From Inverted Festival

Been craving those festival vibes?
With festival season just around the corner, you’ll want to know exactly what’s in store for all the events you’re tossing up.
Plus, since music festivals are at least back on the cards now, there are some experiences you’ll definitely want to put on your list.
The Chats’ drummer, Matt Boggis, spoke to Student Edge over the phone to spill all the tea about what’s going down at this year’s Inverted Festival and why it’s an event you won’t want to miss.
Inverted Festival is a brand-new, all-ages Australian punk and pub rock music festival, jam packed with some of your favourite Aussie bands, Australia’s best BMX, Skate and FMX athletes, and so much more.
It’ll take place at the Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium on Saturday, 1 May 2021. The festival is featuring bands like Skegss, Spiderbait, Trophy Eyes, Waax, Stand Atlantic and Fangz, and—of course—The Chats.
In case you need a refresher, The Chats initially went viral for their song "Smoko" and its accompanying music video in 2017. In 2020, they released their banger "Pub Feed", which is an ode to the classic Aussie dinner of a cold schooner and a phat Schnitty.
The song had us all feeling the iso feels last year, when the majority of Australia was in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic and pubs were forced to close their doors.
Of course, "Pub Feed" is on The Chats’ set list for Inverted, but as Matt explains, you shouldn’t need too much convincing to head to a music festival in 2021.
"It’s the first big festival in a pretty long time so, it’ll be cool to get back into a festival and to see people liking music again," Matt says.
"It’s the first time in a long time where everyone can get together and see live music and see a bunch of other cool stuff. Stupid to miss it really ‘cos festivals haven’t happened in so long."
With the best in old school and new Aussie punk and pub rock bands set to headline the festival, Matt is just as excited to see other bands as he is to play on stage.
"We’re pretty keen to see Skegss and Waax. There are heaps of good bands playing; I’m keen to see everyone," he says.

If the music scene isn’t really your thing, you’ll want to head to Inverted for the action sports. The festival is showcasing the very best in BMX, FMX and Skating, featuring X-Games Medalists like Jackson Strong, Logan Martin and Kyle Baldock, as well as Street League Skateboarding Medalists like Tommy Fynn and Hayley Wilson.
On top of drumming, Matt is also really into skateboarding and is excited about how unique Inverted Festival is.
"There’s heaps of skating and bike riding and stuff, so it seems like there’s a lot of alternative stuff going on," Matt says.
"It would be attracting lots of different people, obviously for the music side of things but also with the sport like the skating and the bike riding going on.
"I’m keen to see it all."

Of course, if you’re just here ‘cos you love The Chats, you’ll be pumped to know that they’ll be on stage for a good 50 minutes and will be performing a few of their fan favourite tunes, plus a few newbies.
"We’ll probably be playing the usual ones like ‘Bus Money’, ‘Temperature’, ‘Pub Feed’ and ‘Smoko’.
"We’ve got a few new songs too that we’ll be playing. They haven’t really been released yet but we’ve just been playing them to warm them up and see how people like them."
