Terry Crews Blasts "Toxic Masculinity" In His Senate Speech About #MeToo

Trigger Warning: This article discusses sexual assault.
During the height of the #metoo movement last year, Terry Crews announced he had also been a victim of men taking advantage of their positions of power.
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine star alleged he was sexually assaulted by Adam Venit, then-head of the Motion Picture Group at William Morris Endeavor, one of the biggest talent agencies in the world.
Crews later said he would sue Venit for his behaviour, with the lawsuit outlining that Venit was "like a rabid dog, sticking his tongue in and out of his mouth provocatively" while he assaulted Crews.
Since then, Crews has been a vocal supporter of the #metoo movement and has now appeared in front of the U.S. Senate's Judiciary Committee to express his support behind a new Bill that will see survivors given more rights.
In the speech, he also drew connections between toxic masculinity and its effect on the men who perpetuate it.
"This is how toxic masculinity permeates culture. As I shared my story, I was told over and over that this was not abuse. This was just a joke. This was just horseplay. But I can say one man's horseplay is another man's humiliation," Crews said.
"As I watched women and colleagues in my industry come forward to share their #MeToo stories, this shame washed over me again and I knew I needed to act."
His comments have been praised all over social media.
The nature of toxic masculinity is such that men who are socialized to uncritically adhere to its standards *don't listen to women*, which is why it is so important that @terrycrews uses his platform to speak about the destructive nature of toxic masculinity and rape culture. https://t.co/j3df8f6MCN
