Taylor Swift Is Threatening to Sue a Blogger Who Compared Her to Hitler

Look what you made… you know what we’re going to say.
The North Carolina chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has come to the defence of a blogger who received defamation threats from Taylor Swift.
According to the ACLU, PopFront editor Meghan Herning received an “intimidating letter” from Swift and her attorney, demanding Herning take down her September 5 story “Swiftly to the alt-right: Taylor subtly gets the lower case kkk in formation.”
As you can probably assume from the title, the article is no glowing review of Swift’s recent output.
In it, Herning argues that Swift has become “an icon of white supremacist, nationalists, and other fringe groups,” and that the lyrics to “Look What You Made Me Do” (not to mention the accompanying video) send “dog whistles to white supremacy”.
One aspect of the video that comes under scrutiny is the sequence where a leather-clad Swift addresses an audience. (Cut to 1:50.) “Taylor lords over an army of models from a podium, akin to what Hitler had in Nazis Germany,” Herning writes.
“The similarities are uncanny and unsettling.”
Well, Swift wasn’t a fan of this critique at all, hence the letter from her lawyer.
“The story is replete with demonstrable and offensive falsehoods which bear no relation to reality or the truth about Ms. Swift,” the letter reads.
“It appears to be a malicious attack against Ms. Swift that goes to great lengths to portray Ms. Swift as some sort of white supremacist figurehead, which is a baseless fiction masquerading as fact and completely misrepresents Ms. Swift.”
The letter also reiterates the fact that Swift denounces both “white supremacy and the alt-right”.
“Moreover, Ms. Swift has not remained silent regarding this issue, and she has made clear that she does not approve of any association with such repugnant groups or their beliefs.”
Nonetheless, the ACLU has jumped to the defence of Herning, arguing, “This is a completely unsupported attempt to suppress constitutionally protected speech.”
“The press should not be bullied by high-paid lawyers or frightened into submission by legal jargon,” Herning added in a statement.
“These scare tactics may have worked for Taylor in the past, but I am not backing down.”
Needless to say, the Reputation roll-out is not going very smoothly. (It’s out this Friday.)
