Super Mario Bros. Just Turned 30

Here is your daily reminder that time is an unstoppable bullet train to which you can only cling with futility for a finite period before it continues on without you.

Super Mario Bros. is 30 years old.

Well, 30 years and one day.

As expected, Google is celebrating in sweet style. Search for "Super Mario Bros." and then click on that cube on the right hand side of your page.

Released by Nintendo on September 13, 1985, the game is considered one of the most significant in console history. (Its arcade-only predecessor, Mario Bros., arrived in ’83.)

Though Mario first hopped onto the scene in 1981’s barrel-happy Donkey Kong, it was SMB that became Nintendo’s most iconic title. In fact, Mario was known only as “Jumpman” back then, though he did have a moustache that pointed towards his true ethnicity.

According to Yahoo, more than 40 million copies of the original Super Mario Bros. have been sold. When you account for each entry in the franchise, that number grows – as if powered by mushroom – to 310 million.

The latest instalment – Super Mario Maker – has been receiving very good reviews, but personally, it’s unlikely any sequel could ever match the addictive playability of Mario and Luigi’s first two adventures.

Don't pretend that you don't know the theme tune by heart.
