Should We Fear Technology?

Should We Fear Technology?

The arrival of new Black Mirror episodes on Netflix got us thinking: Should we fear technology?

Having advanced much from the crippling days of the 20th century, where computers and televisions were boxed and had an additional back attachment, telephones were not cordless and touch screens and apps were ideas of fantasy, technology has progressed at an increasingly rapid pace.

Today, what appears to consume and captivate communities of people is also seen as a cause of unease to many, who must grapple with technology’s hypnotising and all-consuming ways.

However, I don’t believe technology should be feared; if anything, it should be embraced for its ability to influence, connect and advance our inventions (provided it's used correctly).

Technology, whether people like it or not, has the capability of influencing the minds and opinions of people. It informs the world of the news, advancements in research, politics and culture. In fact, technology is responsible for platforms on which almost everything is communicated. In this way, technology allows for a broad spectrum of information to be presented and supported by facts and statistics that allow its audience to make informed decisions regarding the route of their world.

In another aspect, technology has brought the world much closer in many ways. Dating back to the late 20th century (not a history lesson I promise!) in which wars, significant events and movements occurred, it was technology that captured these moments. Technology has improved many global connections (including communication and even international commerce), supporting not only personal lives but countries and our worldwide community.

What may have been in the past a figment of the imagination - cures for diseases, instant food, or instant messaging - have become a reality.

Should we fear technology? Would one fear the idea of curing cancer? Or prevention of disease? Via technology, there are many possibilities for the future wherein the impossible can be made possible. Therefore, we should not fear it, as it is essentially what allows progress.

Technology has improved the systems of our world, strengthening our global community with its ability to influence, connect and advance.
