I Can't Quit You... Sardines And Avocado On Toast

We asked members what they just can't “quit.” One responded with a love letter to his fishy breakfast concoction. (Seems like an acquired taste.)

Dear sardines & avocado on toast,

It's been three months since we first met.

Well that's not technically true. I have encountered you all on other occasions in various permutations, but it's been three months since we all collectively hooked up.

How can I describe my life before our relationship? I was no longer into cereal. (I'd make Weet-Bix, and then seemingly no matter how much milk I'd put on them, it would evaporate.) And I was also getting sick of taking my fish oil capsules, but I knew I needed to consume a hell of a lot of Omega 3 to keep my brain in tip top shape for studying.

I still remember when our paths crossed. I was in the fruit and vegetable section buying bananas and I saw your gorgeous round shape. I thought, 'Hmmm, haven't had an avocado in a while'. Oh, the innocence of youth.

The sardines were a different story. I was so over buying cans of tuna that I was almost embarrassed to be seen in the canned fish aisle. But then, what was this? For a mere dollar extra I could have like three times the Omega 3 of tuna? I picked you up gingerly, as if you were a kitten.

As for my old friend bread, well we were certainly an on again off again couple, weren't we? There was that whole thing about which colour was right for me; the grains getting stuck in my teeth; the shock when I switched to gluten free; and the changes in price and taste. Still, I always enjoyed making sandwiches with you.

And now we're at our anniversary, albeit an early one, I feel like we've crossed some tough hurdles together (remember that time you went all brown on me when I'd just bought you, avocado?) and I genuinely look forward to seeing you each morning.
