Avocados Are Cheap as Heck Right Now (So, Is It Time to Buy a House?)

Frugl have crunched the numbers.

With all the awful bad that’s going on in the world right now, we’re gonna jump on any good news we can.

Thankfully, grocery comparison app Frugl have come through and delivered Millennials and Gen Z alike the news they’ve been waiting their whole lives to hear.

According to their latest ‘2021 Avocado Index’ (very scientific), both Hass and Shepard (Shepard is the worst) avocados are the cheapest they’ve been in over 18 months.

That’s right, both varieties dropped to as low as $1 for a single avo mid this year. Right now, they’re hovering around the $1.50 price point at Coles and Woolies.

How and why though? Well, According to Frugl, Aussie avocado farmers have had a bumper crop this year, and as we know, with more supply there’s less demand.

Just check out these very important graphs by Frugl. You can see that the cost of the breakfast fruit went from a whopping $5ish all the way to a tasty $1ish.

“Frugl’s Avocado Index has found that we’ve been paying upwards of $5 right down to just $1 recently for the humble avocado, and now is the time to put avocados back on the menu at home,” Frugl’s Managing Director and CEO Sean Smith said in a statement.

“With many restaurants and cafes coming in and out of lockdown over the past 18 months, our insights at Frugl demonstrate that the bumper harvest of Australian avocados being diverted to supermarkets has led to reduced prices for consumers to recreate their favourite meals at home.” 

This is great news for us younger generations, ‘cos not only does it mean that we can eat the breakfast of our dreams, but we can also finally afford a house (lol I wish).

Taking a closer look at those graphs though, it does appear that this cheap season of avos might not last long, so eat ‘em up while you can.
