"Rocket League" Will Be Free-to-Play From 23 September, According to an Accidental Leak

The secret is out. Thanks to Nintendo spilling the beans, we now know that Rocket League will permanently go free-to-play from 23 September.

From next week, fans will no longer need an online subscription to Xbox, PlayStation or Switch; it will be free on all platforms including PC.

While fans knew it was coming, Psyonix, Rocket League's developer, initially told the Rocket League community that it would be released "this summer" but left us with no set date.

The release date was caught when a leaked image found on Nintendo’s website stated that the free version of the game would be available from next week.

Fans quickly got a hold of this image and spread the news throughout Twitter and Reddit. A short video by Hungray7 shows the announcement on the Nintendo store page.

While the accidental announcement has since been taken down from the Nintendo store, Psyonix has rolled with hype and released all the goss on the new update of the game.

Players who already spent money to pay for the original game won’t miss out either. Current owners of the game will get a giant gaming bundle including all Rocket League DLC from the last five years, ‘legacy’ items, new car gear and a specialised player title.

The new update of Rocket League also comes with cross-platform progression, the new 'support-a-creator' feature, competitive tournaments, game-wide challenges and much more. You can read about all the new stuff here.

If you’re hoping to get your hands on the free version of the game, while it will be available on all platforms, you can no longer download it from Steam. Rocket League will only be available to download from the Epic Games Launcher storefront.

While you can’t get it from Steam anymore, you can still play it there if you already own the game.

As for console players, you can yeet away your subscriptions if you want because you will be able to access the game from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store and Nintendo eShop as normal, just for free.
