Rick Astley is Suing Yung Gravy Over ‘Betty (Get Money)’

He’s never gonna give this up.

Yung Gravy is facing a lawsuit over one of his biggest hits ‘Betty (Get Money)’ from none other than Rick Astley himself.

The track is most recognisable for its catchy melody that borrows Rick Astley’s most popular 80’s hit ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’.

Man, I love good Rick Roll.

If this lawsuit is leaving you a little confused, you were probably tricked like I was into thinking that the Yung Gravy track sampled ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’.

But it’s actually not Rick Astley singing at all, which means its technically not a sample.

Yung Gravy told Billboard in an interview that ‘someone who had part-ownership of the rights to the sample [of 'Never Gonna Give You Up']’ said they ‘should try it out’, so they recreated the song with different instruments and a different singer because it ‘makes it easier legally’.

Billboard recently reported on this lawsuit, stating that while Yung Gravy was allowed to interpolate ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ into his song – which means using part of a melody, but re-recording it – it did not give him and his team the right to impersonate exact sounds, including Rick Astley’s voice.

Entertainment Weekly obtained legal documents that claims Yung Gravy ‘broke federal trademark law and created “further consumer confusion” by “fraudulently and publicly” saying that Astley was a fan and supportive of the song’.

Rick Astley is suing Yung Gravy, his producers and Republic Records, and will be seeking all profits from the 'violation of his rights', and damages believed to me in 'millions of dollars', according to Music Feeds.

Big yikes, Gravy.
