Real Friends: Selena Gomez's BFF Gave Her a Kidney

Selena Gomez has posted about her recent kidney transplant on Instagram, praising her friend for the ultimate gift.

Selena Gomez explained on Instagram that she has been dealing with lupus since 2013, which is an autoimmune disease that attacks the body's own cells rather than the foreign cells it is supposed to.

She found out that she needed a kidney transplant due to the disease's advancement in her system. Luckily for Gomez, one of her best friends, Francia Raisa, a fellow actor, offered to donate one of hers.

That is what true friendship looks like.

I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made. At the time of writing, the post has received more than 7.2 million likes which is no real surprise given that Gomez is the most-followed Instagrammer.

It's not the first time that Gomez has had to give her music career the back seat for health reasons. Back in 2013, Gomez had to cancel an Australian tour to undergo chemotherapy for her lupus.

Celebrity gossip outlets reported that she had checked into rehab which Gomez later criticised for being heartless. "I wanted so badly to say, 'You guys have no idea. I'm in chemotherapy. You're a**holes.'," she said Billboard.

It's likely that Gomez will make a full recovery from the kidney transplant.
