Ready Your Onions, There Are Plans For a "Shrek" Reboot

Somebody once told me this overused Shrek joke was gonna roll me.

Shrek is a modern-day children's classic. It all has all the hallmarks of a great tale: a stinky heroic ogre, a talking donkey played by Eddie Murphy and a killer cat.

It's also responsible for giving Smash Mouth's "All Star" a second (and third?) lifeline, but we'll just pretend that part didn't happen.

The movie's popularity 17 years after its theatrical release, largely due in part to memes, has meant there's considerable interest in bringing Shrek back to the screen.

While it was announced a few years back that the next Shrek installment would be a sequel, the project's producer Chris Meledandri (Despicable Me) told Variety that he favoured a reboot; though, ideally with the original voice cast.

"When you look back on those vocal performances they're awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterisations," Meledandri told Variety.

"The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it's not simply yet another film in a series of sequels."

While new Shrek content will probably always be welcomed by the general community, our nostalgia makes us a wee bit wary of reboots.

It seemed Twitter's hoi polloi were united in disapproval.

Shrek doesn’t need rebooting.

I thought Shrek had the Casablanca treatment, you know where the film is considered such a masterpiece every film studio agreed to never remake it.

Maybe, some things aren't meant to be rebooted? I'd say Shrek is one of those things.
