"PUBG" Is Taking "Fortnite" to Court For Allegedly Copying Their Concept

Fortnite might have to pay up to the OG battle royale title, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.

After months of speculation, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) developer Bluehole is apparently taking their (only recently) more successful rival, Fortnite to court in South Korea for copyright infringement.

Bluehole's VP and executive producer, Chang Han Kim, released a statement back in September last year commenting he was "concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known." 

"We have also noticed that Epic Games [the game's developer] references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press," Han Kim also said.

"This was never discussed with us and we don't feel that it's right."

So, it appears that the tension had already been brewing for some time.

The lawsuit was actually filed back in January, according to the Korea Times, and will determine whether Epic Games' Fortnite is some kind of PUBG copy. 

Back in January, PUBG was still reigning supreme as the biggest PC game at the time, with Fortnite fast gaining traction on the title. Since then, Fortnite has taken over and other popular games, like Call of Duty, have decided to introduce battle royale modes into their titles.

But, while PUBG may no longer be the king of battle royales, you've still gotta pay respect (and real money) to the OG if you want to lift its concept. Now, it's up to the courts to decide if Fortnite has indeed done that.
