Potato Scallops, Or Whatever You Wanna Call ‘Em, Are Coming to McDonald’s

Potato Scallops, Or Whatever You Wanna Call ‘Em, Are Coming to McDonald’s

Batter up!

When you’re fiending a greasy, battered meal and your local fish and chips shop chuck a few potato scallops into your order, it’s like Christmas has come early.

The humble and severely underrated potato snack is now coming to McDonald’s for a limited time, served with a packet of chicken salt to compliment the delectable morsel.

But you may be wondering - Anica, what is the difference between a potato scallop and a hash brown? Good question.

You probably already know that Maccas hash browns are fairly chunky, crispy, and the potato itself has a sort of ‘mashed’ texture.

Potato scallops, on the other hand, consist of one continuous thin slice of potato that is then battered and deep fried. It has a more uniform appearance, with less harsh edges (like the hash brown).

Turns out there’s a lot of international dispute over what hash browns and potato scallops are called. Americans call the former ‘potato cakes’, apparently? Might have to get the UN involved.

We haven’t had the opportunity to try Macca’s rendition of the iconic potato scallop just yet, as they’ll be available from 11 January across all restaurants nationwide and via McDelivery.

It’s the latest addition in a slew of limited-edition releases from the fast-food giant, following the El Maco burger and Cheesy Jalapeno Bites.

Also being released on 11 January is the Hokey Pokey Thickshake. It’s essentially a creamy milkshake mixed with Hokey Pokey flavoured syrup—AKA honeycomb toffee.

We know what we’re having for lunch tomorrow.
