Pope Francis Is The First Pope To Join Instagram (But Selena Gomez Still Has More Followers)

Pope Francis has become the first Pope to join social media service Instagram; a clear response to Selena Gomez’s recent crowning as the Queen of the Gram.

Francis isn't going to just let Selena own Instagram without a fight.

Having posted five times since joining yesterday, franciscus has already garnered 1.4 million followers.

(As impressive as that is, as far as religious leaders whose names begin with a 'P' go, nothing could possibly top the Purple One's Insta-debut for pure excitement and funkiness.)

Still, Gomez has 70.6 million watching her every Insta move, so the Pope has some savvy social media managing to do if he wants to near that number.

Meanwhile, Pope Benedict XVI is no doubt regretting sleeping on the whole Instagram thing, having been Pope for a full three years after the photo-sharing service went live to the public. Maybe he was more of a Snapchat guy.

Now Pope Francis gets all the credit of being the Instapope, which is almost as cool as that time he ordered a pizza to the Popemobile. Let the race to the top begin!
