Pauline Hanson Reckons the Voting Age Should Be Raised to 21 Because “Kids… Don’t Have Any Idea”

Massive Macklemore expert Pauline Hanson has said she would like to see the voting age raised from 18 to 21.

The One Nation leader’s call came during a debate with Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young on noted political forum Sunrise.

They were ostensibly talking about a potential ban on cigarette sales to people under the age of 21, but since they both agreed on that front, Senator Hanson decided to shake things up and drop the voting-age bombshell, to Senator Hanson-Young’s befuddlement.

"I know the Greens want to reduce the voting age to 16," she said.

"How ridiculous. Because you’re brainwashing kids in schools, they don’t have any idea, they’ve never held a job, they’ve never paid taxes, they have no understanding of politics."

"So, you’re giving these idiots out here…" she continued, before changing track. However, it’s fair to assume she was referring to voters and potential voters under the age of 21.

(Spare a thought for slumped-over Sam Armytage, who let Kochie try to corral the feuding senators.)

Of course, it’s no surprise Senator Hanson is fearful of the youth vote. According to The Guardian, of the 98,000 Australians who flocked to enrol to vote ahead of the marriage equality postal survey, more than 65,000 were between the ages of 18 and 24. That’s a pretty powerful new voting bloc.

No doubt young Aussies will want to prove how much of an understanding of politics they have in the Queensland election—Hanson's home—this November.

  • Maybe Pauline Hanson has no idea, making all of these incorrect assumptions of younger people. Making ages for people to be able to do things rise up to 21 is beyond ridiculous.

    • She is right. Schools are spout heaps and heaps of Left-wing propaganda. If you don't agree with left wing views you are shunned by most in a school community. The age should be raised. At 18, some people are still in school and really don't know what the real world is like because they live with and rely on their parents. RAISE THE AGE!!!!
