Patty Mills and the Boomers Celebrated Their Bronze Medal by Singing to “Down Under”

Give that man a Vegemite sandwich!

Nothing could be more Australian than Patty Mills celebrating the Boomers’ bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games by leading them in a singalong to Men at Work’s “Down Under”.

Honestly, can we blame them?

A medal in the men’s basketball at the Games has eluded the Boomers since they first started competing in the sport in 1956, so this celebration has been a long time coming.

At long last, that drought was broken on the weekend with a 107-93 win over Slovenia. Mills—who yesterday signed with the Brooklyn Nets after 10 seasons with San Antonio—was dominant in the game, scoring 42 points to lead the Aussies to victory.

What a hero.

After a performance like that, it’s no surprise that footage of Mills leading a sing and dance to “Down Under” has gone viral on Twitter.

In the vid, the Boomers captain is seen surrounded by his teammates, draped in the green and gold and blasting the chorus out at the top of his lungs. This is what peak Australian looks like.

Watch the moment for yourself below and enjoy.

Speaking about the victory, the 2014 NBA champion said this moment was a long time in the making for the team.

“We’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, and you know, it’s taken a lot of experiences, a lot of ups and a lot of downs,” Mills told Channel 7 after the win.

“It’s our culture at the end of the day, it’s our Australian culture, our Aussie spirit. It’s time to bring an Olympic medial home, back to our country Australia so I can hang it up at mum and dad’s house.”

Too right it’s time, but also—we love that he’s gonna hang his medal up at his mum and dad’s place. Never forget your roots fam.
