Ben Simmons Is Coming Back to Australia to Play for the Boomers, Baby

The 76ers' season may be over, but Simmons SZN is just beginning.

Having introduced Americans to the meat pie, and his colleagues to kangaroos, Melbourne-born Ben Simmons has announced he will finally represent Australia on the world stage in basketball.

The Philadelphia 76ers point guard and 2018 NBA Rookie of the Year made the call on Twitter today, after thanking his fans for their support over the season. (The 76ers were booted out of the NBA Playoffs after a heartbreaking buzzer-beater loss to Kawhi Leonard’s Toronto Raptors.)

In the video he uploaded, he said, "I am going to be a Boomer for the upcoming events, so stay tuned."

Those upcoming events include a showdown between Australia’s national team, the Boomers, against Canada Basketball in Perth on 16 and 17 August.

The Boomers then face off against Team USA in Melbourne on 22 and 24 August.

These exhibition games will likely see the biggest assortment of NBA names ever assembled on Australian shores, and they precede the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup in China, which runs from 31 August to 15 September.

On Weibo, Simmons reportedly told his Chinese fans he'll be seeing them in September.

"Ni Hao China!" he began, as translated by Fox Sports.

"Thanks for all the support this season, it was a tough way to go out. I’m happy to say I’m looking forward to representing my country Australia in the upcoming @FIBA World Cup in China! Stay tuned."

Alongside Simmons, the Boomers lineup will likely include local NBA stars Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills and Joe Ingles.

Get hype. Simmons may even be saving his first three-pointer for the down under matches.
