Oscar Realness: Brie Larson Refused to Clap for Casey Affleck

International treasure and legitimate princess Brie Larson has been shackled with one of the most Kafkaesque burdens of the 2017 awards circuit.
In 2016, she deservedly won the Best Actress Oscar for playing a sexual assault survivor in Room. At the ceremony, she also hugged actual sexual assault survivors who took to the stage in honour of a Best Original Song nominee from documentary The Hunting Ground.
She even spent much of the last year as an active advocate for women’s rights (along with scoring a sweet gig as Captain Marvel). And yet, as is the lot of the Best Actress winner, she’s had to announce the 2017 winner for Best Actor at numerous awards ceremonies.

And the most frequent winner of 2017 just happened to be Casey Affleck, who settled several sexual harassment lawsuits stemming from his 2010 movie I’m Still Here.
Needless to say, she wasn’t here for that, and at yesterday’s all-awkward, all-the-time Oscar ceremony, she declined to applaud Affleck as he took to the stage. (She still had to hug him though.)

And would you believe this was only the third most uncomfortable thing to happen during the broadcast?
Of course, you know what takes the top spot: La La Land being announced as the Best Picture winner, and then the Academy, like Mr. Sheffield in The Nanny, taking it back. (Again, congrats and condolences to Team Moonlight.)
But it was preceded by another humdinger of a mistake during the ‘In Memoriam’ segment.
As eagle-eyed local viewers immediately noted, the Australian—and very much alive—producer Jan Chapman was pictured, over the name of actually-deceased costume designer Janet Patterson.
In a statement to Variety, Chapman said she was “devastated” by the incident.
“I had urged her agency to check any photograph which might be used and understand that they were told that the Academy had it covered,” she said.
“Janet was a great beauty and four-time Oscar nominee and it is very disappointing that the error was not picked up.
“I am alive and well and an active producer.”
Hooray for Hollywood?
