Brie Larson Is Fave To Play "Captain Marvel", Becoming First Actress To Lead A Standalone MCU Movie

Brie Larson might celebrate her recent Oscar win by going to Disneyland (or, at least the part that owns Marvel).

Variety is reporting that Room star Larson is the frontrunner to play Captain Marvel. If she signs on, she’ll become the first actress to anchor a standalone movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

(That is, unless studio head Kevin Feige stops dragging his heels and makes a Black Widow spin-off already.)

According to sources, Larson is the studio’s top pick for the part and she’s “leaning towards” taking it, though it’s not yet known where negotiations stand. Marvel, obviously, offered no comment.

For the uninitiated, Captain Marvel’s alter ego is Carol Danvers, an air force pilot who winds up accidentally fused with alien DNA during a flight, and is given a bunch of superhero powers as a result. Handy!

The movie was announced by the studio in 2014, with an expected release date of 2019. Since then, there have been few updates, besides the hiring of screenwriters Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman.

Should Larson secure the role, it will fulfil the promise she first showed as ‘Princess Valhalla’ in the TV show United States of Tara. (RIP UST.)
