One Nation Candidate Dumped For Anti-Gay Comments; Won’t Apologise For What She Has Said

Shan Ju Lin, former Queensland One Nation candidate, has declared she will not apologise for the anti-gay Facebook posts which led to her sacking.

One Nation decided to dump Ms Lin on Saturday, in light of several controversial Facebook posts espousing anti-gay sentiments, the ABC reports. She was running as Pauline Hanson’s candidate for the Queensland electorate of Bundamba, but has since been sacked from the party.

Ms Lin wrote in one Facebook post that “gays should be treated as patients,” and “abnormal behaviour leads to abnormal crime”. The post has since been deleted, but the content was in relation to the case of George Harasz and Douglas Wirth, who were accused of sexually abusing their foster kids in 2011; both have been cleared of charges.

Speaking to the ABC, the previous One Nation candidate has refused to apologise for her comments. Ms Lin does not believe her comments were homophobic, rather, in the interests of child welfare.

“I can’t see anything wrong with my post… I asked another candidate to check and he couldn’t find anything wrong with my post,” she said. Ms Lin voiced concerns about the Safe Schools anti-bullying program, insisting it would support and promote “gay lifestyles, which [are] against the traditional values”.

It's not the first time Ms Lin has posted inflammatory material, either.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has made a statement against Ms Lin, saying her views are not shared by the party. “I will not stand by and allow people to trash the party or my name, so I make no apologies for being tough on candidates,” she voiced.

The news of her sacking came as quite the surprise; Ms Lin found out, while overseas, through a Facebook message from Hanson’s chief of staff James Ashby.

“I think Pauline gave him too much power,” she said. “He is the one running the party, not Pauline.”

The speed at which she was sacked has also caught Ms Lin off guard. She told reporters how it's “remarkable” that she had no chance to defend herself.

It’s believed that the former One Nation candidate has received encouragement from supporters and has been contacted by other parties.
