Olivia Colman’s Oscars Dress Had Pockets, Making Her Default 'Best Dressed'

Turns out the revolution was televised.

Olivia Colman delighted everyone—even Glenn Close—when she became the surprise winner of the Best Actress prize at yesterday’s Academy Awards, thanks to her affable and oh-so-British speech.

(It also helped that her performance in The Favourite was legitimately the best of the year. Sorry Glenn.)

But with the dust settling on her victory, and her name now etched onto the ancient tablets of Oscar lore, it’s time we turn our attention to another remarkable aspect of her presence at the ceremony.

Her. Dress. Had. Pockets.

Forget—just for a second, as hard as it may be—that the former Peep Show star won an Oscar and then spent three minutes being sweetly hilarious on stage, capping her speech, as we all should, by exclaiming "Lady Gaga!"

She did it all while wearing a. dress. with. pockets. And you better believe people noticed.

As our member Maisy Sutcliffe wrote in her op-ed “Women’s Clothing Needs More Pockets, Do You Hear Us?!” back in 2017, pockets on women's clothing is a rarity.

"Why should we have to reach for the potential positions of pockets only to realise once again that we are reaching for something we have been deemed not worthy of?" she argued.

"Why scramble into handbags to pull out Myki cards and loose change, when we could easily have pulled it out of our denied pockets? Why should we have to stick our hands under our armpits and risk looking slightly ridiculous instead of warming them in our spacious pockets?"

Well, rest easy Maisy. Thanks to Olivia Colman, change is coming.

Sarah Paulson and Gemma Chan were also spotted wearing dresses with pockets, however, they, sadly, didn’t also get to collect Oscars while being British, meaning they didn’t get to complete the same trifecta of perfection as Colman.

Go on, watch the speech again.
