You Don’t Need to Be a STEM Genius to Make a Difference

Think big, not just science 🤔
This article is presented in partnership with Samsung Solve for Tomorrow.
Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow competition is all about inspiring students to bring their bright ideas to life. This competition gets young people, aged 14-24, to harness multiple skills (not just STEM!) to tackle issues important to them.
The categories for this year are Education, Environmental Sustainability via Technology, Social Change Through Sport and Technology and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Got some big ideas? Get a team together and put your skills to the test. This competition is about creativity, STEM skills, problem-solving and teamwork.
It’s about ideas, not just inventions.

While you might be thinking that you need to have a finished product or fully built prototype, you actually don’t.
What matters most is your thinking and how your creative, thoughtful and community driven solution can tackle real world problems.
Samsung Solve for Tomorrow isn’t just for tech whizzes or engineering pros; it’s for fresh thinking and how it can spark real change.
Whether you’re passionate about making a difference in sustainability, the environment, education or equity – no idea is too small.
It’s a challenge built for all students.

Samsung Solve for Tomorrow is free to participate and here to support the aspirations of all young Australians considering a future career in STEM.
But it’s not all about STEM. Solve for Tomorrow is also about creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication to create solutions that address issues you’re most passionate about.
Plus, you can read all about the winners from last year’s Solve for Tomorrow competition.
In 2023, we saw an incredible idea for innovation from three students Flynn Megahan, Mikey Megahan and George Pidduck who came up with the idea of Sustainabili-tree. While they didn’t have a finished stereotype, they had an idea with heaps of info on how it would work, how it would be implemented and its lasting impact.
Their idea would involve picking up Christmas trees after the holiday season, taking the trees to partner recycling plants to be turned into gift wrapping to use the following Christmas.
Your skills are more relevant than you think.

Creating a solution to an issue in your community is about more than just STEM. It’s also about your creativity, resilience and teamwork.
You’ll need to do more than just provide a solution to a problem and consider how it will impact people, how you’ll communicate it effectively and how you can create inquiry, experimentation and reflection as you work through your project.
Got strong communication skills and a bright mind full of creative ideas?
This is your sign to start brainstorming and work towards helping your community in a way that matters strongly to you.
