Uh, Why is ‘The Minions 2’ Soundtrack So Good?

We can tolerate some Minion memes for this.

A mysterious, 70’s style poster started appearing on the streets of London a couple of weeks ago. By all intents and purposes, it looked to be an ultra-hip festival line-up.

That’s why we were all surprised when industry-renowned music producer, Jack Antanoff, announced it was, in fact, the tracklist for the upcoming blockbuster Minions: Rise of Gru. Yep, you read that correctly.

With huge names like Tame Impala, Kali Uchis, Caroline Polachek, Phoebe Bridgers, BROCKHAMPTON (the list goes on), this is one helluva list.

And 70’s fans should prepare to get up on their feet. All the artists are covering hits from and around the era, such as “Funkytown” by Lipps Inc and “Bang Bang” by Nancy Sinatra.

Minions: Rise of Gru is slated for a 1 July release date in the U.S., but singles are expected to start being released from 20 May according to Variety.

So, why the 70’s fever?

The film follows our favourite pointy-nosed villain, Gru, through his childhood and subsequent uprising. While Despicable Me was set in 2010 when Gru is 50 years old, this prequel film is set in 1968 when he’s at the tender age of eight.

IMDb describes Minions: The Rise of Gru as “the untold story of one twelve-year-old's dream to become the world's greatest supervillain.”

If the Minion memes that will inevitably spawn as a result of this movie don’t slap, this soundtrack certainly will.
