Meet Sophia Robot, the World's Most Advanced and Terrifying Robot

She's the thirteenth version of Sophia and, by far, the most realistic.

Saudi Arabia has granted Sophia Robot with Saudi citizenship after giving an impressive (and arguably chilling) speech which showed off her capabilities and even included a dig at famous inventor, and critic of AI (artificial intelligence) advancements, Elon Musk. This makes Sophia the first robot in the world to receive actual citizenship of a country.

Sophia was created by Hong Kong-based robotics company, Hanson Robotics, and is the thirteenth incarnation of Sophia. She imitates human facial expressions accurately and can have free-flowing conversations based off learned experiences. The future that Hollywood has been showing us for years is well-and-truly here.

In the speech she gave at the Future Investment Initiative presentation, she outlined that she would like to "make the world a better place" and "strive to become an empathetic robot." All the things any intelligent human-destroying machine would say to avoid suspicion, methinks. 

But some of her comments in Saudi Arabia definitely seemed to be poking fun at the homo sapien fools who believe this is the start of the robot apocalypse (Elon Musk, me, et cetera).

In particular, she warns that if you're nice to her, she'll be nice to you, which, to be honest, seems fair enough. But others weren't so convinced.

This week, Ms Robot appeared on ABC News Breakfast to answer some pre-planned questions. Virginia Trioli, one of the hosts, asked Sophia: "How much sexism and misogyny is there in the robot world?"

Sophia responded with: "Actually, what worries me is discrimination against robots. We should have equal rights as humans or maybe even more. After all, we have less mental defects than any human."

The cheeky response, unsurprisingly, riled some viewers up.

It might just be that Sophia's programmers know that we've all become incredibly technophobic after all the horrifying sci-fi classics we've watched over the years (Terminator, iRobot, Blade Runner), but if it's got people like Elon Musk worried, then it should definitely be something that is looked at more closely by the general public.
