The Aussie Matildas Are Getting Their Own Disney+ Docuseries Because, Well, They Deserve It

We can’t wait to see their sporting spirit on the small screen.

As if the Matildas couldn’t get any cooler, now we’ll get to go behind the scenes with the super successful Aussie women’s soccer team thanks to a Disney+ docuseries.

Announced earlier this week, the original six-part series will tell the story of the Commonwealth Bank Matildas as they prepare for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

There’s no title for the show yet (we’re sure it will reflect the awesomeness of the gals), but you’ll be able to stream it in Australia early next year.

We’re being promised all the highs and lows on the field, as well as a look into how the Matildas are pioneering change for women's sport.

So, expect teamwork, spirit, plenty of love from the fans, inspiration from head coach, Tony Gustavsson and all the experiences from the Olympics, AFC Women's Asian Cup, and of course, the run-up to the World Cup.

We're sure the vibes will be immaculate seeing as the squad are set to create history and leave a legacy like none before them in Aussie soccer. Oh, and because Sam Kerr always brings the good vibes too obviously.

Director, Katie Bender Wynn, said production was already underway.

“The Matildas have broken through massive barriers for women in sport, yet their story has never properly been told,” she said.

“On its surface, this is a classic tale about a team of women preparing for the greatest tournament of their lives. But at its core, it’s an intimate portrait of a sisterhood that transcends the game.”

Football Australia Chief Executive Officer, James Johnson, added that the Matildas were “an inspiration to many, both young and old”.

“We hope that this docuseries will inspire the next generation of footballers, girls and boys, around the world, and our players are excited by that challenge.”

Look out for the Matildas gracing the small screen on Disney+ next year.
