Marvel Will Reveal One of Its Characters Was Gay All Along In Upcoming Movie

Never forget: Korg was gay in the comics.

The directors of Avengers: Endgame say an existing member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be revealed as gay in an upcoming film.

The revelation follows the debut of—and subsequent backlash to—the MCU’s first openly gay character, played by co-director Joe Russo in Endgame.

Though many were glad to finally see the Avengers saga feature an LGBTQIA+ character, there were additional and extremely valid complaints that simply putting this unnamed character in a brief group therapy sesh with Captain America was tokenism at its worst.

Joe and his brother Anthony have since told EW Morning Live that Joe’s character was merely the first "openly" gay character in a Marvel film.

"There’ve been insinuations about other characters’ sexuality, but this is the first openly gay character," Joe said.

Perhaps unwittingly, the Russos had spilled that there were other gay characters in the MCU, and when pressed on who those other queer characters might be, Joe responded, "We’re gonna find out."

"There is a gay character coming up in one of their films, and I think [Marvel Studios President] Kevin [Feige] will make that announcement, I’m sure pretty soon," he added.

With 22 films now under their belt and only one openly queer character, Marvel has seriously been dragging their heels on this particular front, which shouldn’t be surprising, given it took them until 2019 to release their first film led by a female superhero: Captain Marvel.

It doesn’t help that previous attempts to make the MCU more inclusive were quashed. Tessa Thompson initially said that her character Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok was bisexual, but any shots alluding to her sexuality were ultimately deleted from the final film. Same goes for a flirtatious scene between Florence Kasumba and Danai Gurira in Black Panther. This is all despite the fact that the Marvel comics have long featured LGBTQIA+ characters, including Valkyrie, Kasumba's Ayo and even Korg.

Feige has previously said at least two openly gay characters would be revealed in upcoming films: "Both ones you’ve seen and ones you haven’t seen."

With eight films on the horizon between now and 2022, speculation will no doubt be rife until the release of the next flick. Though, the fandom has already set their sights on Valkyrie and Captain Marvel.

In fact, it seems even actors Brie Larson and Tessa Thompson are ready for their characters to pair up, with Thompson telling the LA Times, "I just think it’s so cool and it’s time and why not?"

However, we should say, Bucky Barnes is theoretically back on the market.
