Samuel Johnson and Molly Meldrum's Heartfelt Speech at the Logies Brings Mixture of Actual Tears and Laughter

Last night, Molly actor Samuel Johnson won two Logies and made everyone tear up a bit.

Australia’s annual television awards ceremony, the Logies, are mostly a perennial bore, but every now and then, a few golden moments occur. This year Samuel Johnson dedicated his first ever Silver Logie win to his terminally ill sister, Connie.

She watched on excited for her brother as he plugged her world record attempt at making the largest love heart shape of five cent coins ever. Beautiful stuff.

"My sister is succumbing finally to the perils of cancer after a three decade long tussle and rather than rolling over, she’s going out blazing with an attempted world record for the longest line of coins, absurdly," he explained.

He later won a Gold Logie (the biggest award of the night), though veteran entertainer Molly Meldrum, the very man Johnson had portrayed in Molly, eventually took over the mic during his speech. After speaking for about five minutes, he handed Johnson a golden version of his iconic cowboy hat.

It wasn’t quite a Kanye vs. Taylor Swift moment, but some viewers were a bit peeved that Meldrum dominated Johnson’s time to shine.

Others were sympathetic towards Molly, who endured a head injury in 2011.

Overall, though, most are praising Johnson for creating a tear-jerking moment with his sister and his humble ‘tude towards Meldrum’s take-over.

You can watch the full Gold Logie speech below. (Mind the coarse language!)
