The Mystery Of ‘Mustafa’ Lasted, Like, 12 Hours: Meet The Guy From Waleed Aly's Gold Logie Speech

During his Gold Logie acceptance speech last night, Waleed Aly paid tribute to those with “unpronounceable” names on Australian television.

He cited an encounter with someone in that very room who had revealed that his true name was ‘Mustafa’ but went by a different title for employment’s sake in the industry.

The anecdote almost broke Noni Hazlehurst.

The mysterious ‘Mustafa’ has now been revealed as Tyler De Nawi, one of the stars of Here Come The Habibs.

De Nawi’s acting manager Anthony Kidd made the reveal to News.com.au, though he neglected to explain why Tyler went by, well Tyler. He added simply, “that’s something Tyler felt he needed to do.”

The Lebanese-Australian De Nawi, for his part, has only offered the following coy Tweets as comment on the matter:

Though Tyler’s secret barely survived 12 hours in the public, the calls for diversity and inclusivity by Waleed (and exemplified in the ‘Mustafa’ anecdote) will hopefully remain part of the conversation for some time to come.

We also hope De Nawi is able to go by whichever name he pleases in future.
