It’s Official: “Lightsaber” Has Been Added to the Dictionary

Next up: Midichlorians?

It’s taken four decades, but Star Wars has finally penetrated the consciousness, with its iconic weapon, the lightsaber, finally accepted into Dictionary.com as an honest to goodness word.

Before this point, Star Wars had left no cultural footprint in our everyday lives. So, congrats!

Lightsaber

The website offers this definition for the lightsaber (pronounced ‘lahyt-sey-ber’): “a type of sword, as depicted in the fictional Star Wars universe, with a blade made of laser energy that can both cut and burn.”

Every other word should just quit, unless it too can be described as being or having a “a blade made of laser energy that can both cut and burn.”

Lightsaber is just one of 300 new words added to Dictionary.com, including alt-right, dabbing, hangry, man bun, struggle bus and cat café.

If some of these are unfamiliar to you, allow us to use them in the sentence: “The alt-right dude was hangry from too much dabbing, and rode the struggle bus to a cat café, but he was kicked out by a waiter with a man bun and lightsaber.”

The English language is beautiful.
