Australian National Dictionary Adds 6000 New Slang Words, But Prob Not “Dollarydoos”

The Australian National Dictionary has updated its word bank for the first time since 1988, perhaps in an effort to finally explain what exactly a Yahoo Serious is.

As editor-in-chief Bruce Moore (of course his name is Bruce) put it at the launch of the new edition at Parliament House yesterday, this updated AND is “the schmickest dictionary of all”.

So, what’s among the 6000 new words and phrases? “Captain’s pick” has been introduced into our official national lexicon (though we prefer “Captain’s call”, for alliteration’s sake), along with “doing a Bradbury” (in reference to Winter Olympics champ Steven Bradbury) and “negative gearing”.

“Houso”, “rurosexual” and “skimpy” also made the cut, according to the SMH. Indigenous words – like “bunji” (as in, “a mate”) – get their due too.

We’ll have to wait another 28 years for “knifey spoony” to get a mention, it seems.
