Let the Bad Times Roll: "The Handmaid’s Tale" Has Been Renewed for Season Three

It’s a great time to be a fan of bummer TV shows.

American streaming service Hulu has renewed The Handmaid’s Tale for a third season, because why would you turn off a tap that gives you endless Emmys and viewers?

At Hulu’s annual upfront presentation, it was revealed that the premiere episode of the acclaimed show’s second season brought in double the audience of the first-season premiere, THR reports.

And, with Hulu now boasting 20 million subscribers—up from 17 million at the end of 2017—they can thank Handmaid’s Tale for the exposure. (It won two Golden Globes in January and eight Emmys last September.)

The Handmaid’s Tale also got some additional press this week when Michelle Wolf, during her incendiary White House Correspondents Dinner stand-up set, compared President Donald Trump’s press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, to Aunt Lydia, the evil matron played by Emmy-winner Ann Dowd.

Of course, in Australia, The Handmaid’s Tale airs on SBS, with episodes available to restream at SBS on Demand. We’re three episodes into Season Two and, yikes, things are still not going great for the women of Gilead. The show has begun wading into territory that goes beyond Margaret Atwood’s original novel, and you can probably expect Season Three to head even further into unexplored terrain.

Elisabeth Moss stars in the show as Offred, a modern-day concubine in a dystopian America (renamed Gilead) where the few women who can still carry children are forced into servitude.

We know: It doesn’t exactly sound like the funnest time—and it’s not—but the program’s definitely worth a binge, if you can stomach it.
