Learn To Love Your Commute After Seeing Children Scale An 800-Metre Cliff For School

If you’ve ever whinged about how long it takes to walk home from school, watch the video below and apologise to everyone you’ve ever burdened with your complaints.

The Guardian has reported on a school by the Atuler village in China’s Sichuan province that requires its young students to climb down an 800-metre rock face for 90 minutes to reach it.

And no, it’s not one of those easy, carefree 800-metre descents you always hear about.

This one requires kids as young as six to hold onto rickety vine ladders and, at one part, walk a path with no protective ladder at all. Understandably, some of the students now board at the school for weeks at a time, rather than risk the journey twice daily.

(Why didn’t they make the school closer to home? Villagers say there had been “insufficient room” to build a school on the mountaintop.)

The trek was made public after it was captured on camera by photo-journalist Chen Jie for Beijing News.

Journalists from China’s state broadcaster, CCTV, eventually travelled to the mountain to see it, with one bursting into tears over the prospect of having to climb it herself. We do not blame her.

Authorities in south-west China have since vowed to assist the residents of the mountain village and make their commute a little easier.

Seems fair.
