Just Admit Lizzo’s "Juice" Is the Best Song of 2019 (So Far)

Lizzo is one of 2019’s best success stories. But a wrong must be righted.

She plays the flute. She gives no Fs. She is too good for this world.

She is Lizzo, and just six months into 2019, we already feel comfortable saying she has delivered the tune of the year.

But no, we’re not talking about her surprise chart hit "Truth Hurts", with its wedding-themed music video.

We’re of course talking about "Juice".

"Juice" dropped into our lives on 4 January, and instantly cemented 2019 as a year to remember with its opening güiro-on-sustained guitar beat.

Lizzo herself comes in hot at the 15-second mark with a string of self-validating lines to scrawl into your personal diary, before delivering the most irresistible hook of the year. In the equally irresistible music video, she’s resplendent in Soul Glo hairspray, demonstrating '80s-era gymnastics before trying some ASMR on for size.

Truly, we were not worthy.

Weirdly, however, "Juice" is yet to make a dent on the charts. Earlier this month, it peaked at #93 on the U.S. Billboard Top 100, while in Australia, it never even cracked our Top 50: a national disgrace.

Thankfully, that has not slowed Lizzo’s rise. For that, she can largely thank "Truth Hurts", which first landed in September of 2017 and failed to chart at the time. It got a boost this May after featuring on the soundtrack to the Netflix film Someone Great, and got a second life on Lizzo’s most recent album Cuz I Love You. Here in Australia, "Truth Hurts" debuted at #44 on the ARIA Charts, peaking at #21. In the States, it’s sitting at a chart-high #14 and certain to rise following her BET performance.

By the way, we’re fine with this! Yet, at the year’s end, we cannot crown "Truth Hurts" our #1 song, because it’s positively ancient, as far as pop music goes. It’s even older than her 2018 banger "Boys" (which we'd also be happy to see return to the charts). Nonetheless, they both had their time to shine. Now, it’s time for "Juice".

Will it still be our fave by the end of 2019? There are hot contenders on its tail, from Alex Cameron’s "Miami Memory" (with its unfortunate lyric about oysters; you’ll know it when you hear it) to Tyler, the Creator’s "EARFQUAKE", not to mention all the songs on the huge albums from Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande and, yes, The Lonely Island. Fact is, every time we listen to "Juice", all other songs fade away.

Sorry Tyler, Billie and Ariana. Sometimes the truth hurts.
