James Cameron Is Going To Make Four “Avatar” Sequels, Which Seems Like Too Many

Though James Cameron is yet to produce even one sequel to 2009’s Avatar, he has today revealed plans to make not two, not three, but four additional Pandora-based flicks.
Of course, we’ve long known about his quixotic claims of a proposed quadrilogy. As Vulture now reports, each instalment will be a standalone entry and this newly-announced fifth Avatar will apparently wrap up the “complete” saga. Speaking at CinemaCon, he revealed that Avatar 2 would hit cinemas in 2018, with Avatar 3 following in 2020, Avatar 4 in 2022 and Avatar 5 in 2023. Each of them have Christmas release dates. So, if you love getting the exact same thing for Christmas almost four times in a row, you are in luck. When you consider that Star Wars is about to drop its eighth instalment later this year, and that there are now seven entries to the Rocky franchise, five sequels doesn’t sound so crazy. (Especially when you consider the fact that Avatar is the highest grossing film in history - a rich source to mine if Hollywood ever had one.) But this means that Cameron will be 70 when Avatar 5 lands in theatres (should his timeline hold, which is unlikely), and this franchise will almost outnumber the rest of his filmography. Meaning: James Cameron is never making anything other than Avatars ever again. And it'd be a shame to lose this wildly original filmmaker to the wilderness. Unless, all these sequels are incredible and become the five highest grossing films in history. In that case, keep doing what you do, Jim. He apparently told the CinemaCon audience, “the next time I see you will be on Pandora.” No kidding. Photo: Fox.Topics

I only hope they do a good job with the movies. The first Avatar was fantastic and it would be shame to ruin people's interest in it.
Hopefully doesn't ruin people's vision of "Avatar", and what made it great in the first place!
The more the merrier although it's hard to imagine any better.
That's not always the case. Many sequels spoil for the original installment. Look at what Reloaded and Revolution did to the original Matrix. Other sequels that spoiled the original include Rush Hour 2, Hannibal, Blade 2, plus many others. Harry Porter and LOTR cannot be considered to have had sequels as much as it can be said that they were stories told in installments.
I found all of those entertaining to watch but I do agree they all weren't as good as the original and didn't expand on the core philosophy of it. They do attract audience and make sales though.
Too many AVATAR movies isn't physically possible!!!
Last time I checked the characters weren't this blue...
The series is originally called "The Last Airbender."
I'm so excited... I absolutely love Avatar! But I'm worried that they're going to become worse and worse like all movie sequels...
i think this would be great as Avatar is such a great movie
