It's Pi Day, So Let’s Reiterate How to Correctly Eat a Meat Pie

It’s the one day where mathematicians and pastry chefs can come together as one.

Happy Pi Day! And to preemptively answer your first question, yes it’s a thing.

To answer your second question, Pi Day falls on 14 March because it’s on this date that the calendar reads 3/14 (if you write it out as Americans do).

And, to jump straight to your next question, the one you may be a little shy to actually ask aloud, Pi (or π) is how we refer to the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. This seemingly endless number has beguiled our great thinkers (and musicians) for eons.

Phew, glad we got through that.

Sure, we could use this day to celebrate the universal language of mathematics, ponder how it offers us a key to unlocking the secrets of the universe, or simply marvel at those who have memorised Pi beyond 3.14 to the furthest reaches of its trillions of decimal places. However, instead, we’d rather just remind everyone how to eat a pie.

Usually, on Pi Day, pie-slinging organisations around the world give away freebies to capitalise on the homophonous holiday. That’s why, as Australians, we feel an international responsibility to inform everyone how they must correctly eat a meat pie.

Back in 2017, we were scandalised when some Americans began trying meat pies for the first time (inspired by the signing of Melbourne-born baller Ben Simmons to the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers). As Four’N Twenty meat pies went on sale at basketball stadiums, puzzled Yanks demonstrated their pie-ignorance by attempting to eat them with… a knife and fork. (Sorry for the pause, I was briefly sick in my own mouth just by typing out this most disrespectful action.)
