Islamic School Targeted With Firebomb Hate Crime In Perth

An Islamic school in Perth has been targeted with a fire-bomb attack, ABC News reports.

No one was hurt in the incident, in which a Toyota Prado was found burning just outside the Australian Islamic College and mosque in Thornlie.

Witnesses spotted three men running away from the college shortly after the explosion.

Nearby vehicles were also damaged from the heat, while an anti-Islam message was spray-painted on a nearby wall.

The incident took place last night while hundreds of worshippers were praying inside, during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan

A teacher at the college, Yahya Adel Ibrahim, posted a photo of the wreckage to his Facebook page, with a message saying, “the #Perth community was visited this evening by hate.”

“Thankfully our community won't start hating and playing blame games and singling out groups of people in our society. This, undoubtedly is a criminal act of hate, but it is the act of a person or group not the greater whole. May the Al-Mighty open the hearts & minds to peace.”

Australian Islamic College executive principal Abdullah Khan spoke to 720 ABC Perth radio about the attacks this morning.

"I had so many calls from the politicians, the state police department, from other community members last night and this morning," he said.

"I had been on the phone almost throughout, and they have been sending messages of support and condemning this attack.”

The school is continuing to operate today.

"We have given them instructions that it is business as usual and children should come to school as they do every single day," he said.

"In fact the people who were praying last night, they came out obviously when they heard [the explosion] but after some time when they saw that emergency services and police were there, they went back into the mosque and they continued their prayer.

"That's the message that we want to send to those people; that we will not become part of supporting their agenda."
