Facebook Troll Arrested For Racist Comments Directed At Senator Nova Peris

Trolls, be warned. You have been put on blast.

Late yesterday afternoon, NSW police charged Woy Woy-based chiropractor and osteopath Chris Nelson for using a carriage service to cause offence.

That’s a fancy way of saying he got on Facebook to spray horrendous, racially-incendiary hate-speech at outgoing Northern Territory senator Nova Peris.

Prior to Nelson’s arrest, Peris posted their exchange to Facebook with the hashtag, “#Racism – it stops with me.” (Nelson's comments were certainly an inauspicious way to kick off Reconciliation Week.) The post quickly went viral and inspired a petition calling for police investigation.

According to ABC News, Nelson was a member of the Liberal Party’s NSW division when he made the comments.

Now? Not so much.

The 64-year-old NSW chiro maintains his account was hacked and that he is not responsible for the comments. His account has since been deleted, after he reportedly become deluged with “hate messages”.

“I’m definitely not a racist. I’ve got friends who are Aboriginal and family who are Aboriginal,” he told the Herald Sun.

Nonetheless, he will face Gosford Local Court next month.

The NSW Chiropractic Council is also reportedly investigating the issue and considering a suspension of Nelson.

Be good to one another out there, and remember, the "internet is not written in pencil; it's written in ink."
