Drapht Talks “Releasing Demons”, Referencing “Game Of Thrones” On Introspective New Album “Seven Mirrors”

How close did Drapht come to giving up on hip-hop after the massive success of his last album, The Life of Riley?

“I just didn’t want to write music anymore.”

That’s pretty close.

Instead, Drapht, aka Paul Reid, waited five years to capitalise on his biggest record to date (even though it landed at number one on the local charts, resulted in an ARIA and managed a #12 placing in the Hottest 100 for “Rapunzel”).

“I just lost so much enjoyment from the process” he told Student Edge.

But after some time away, he’s back with the introspective Seven Mirrors, which is, as Drapht describes it, “me with my self-expression, just releasing some demons and just getting some s*** off my chest.”

Not wanting to deliver just another "Jimmy Recard" (saying that'd be "boring"), Drapht has turned inward on his latest collection of songs.

We caught up with him ahead of Seven Mirrors' release this Friday to talk about going to those darker places, the art of dropping pop culture references (to “Game of Thrones” and Jason Bateman), working with the Hilltop Hoods and how the Australian hip-hop scene “sometimes doesn’t allow you to be the person you strive to be.”

Seven Mirrors is out Friday August 19. Drapht is touring the country from October 6 to December 17. Get all the dates and deets here.
