Here’s How Vance Joy Got His Sultry Doughnut-Eating Cameo in Charli XCX’s "Boys"

"I was very happy to get that call-up."

Last year, everyone on the planet—and perhaps those on any other yet-to-be-discovered celestial bodies who subscribe to VEVO—swooned over the cotton candy-coloured, ironically-objectifying video for Charli XCX's "Boys".

But here in Australia, we felt a very special kind of pride. Why? Because the Charli XCX-directed clip objectified our "Boys".

Vance Joy and Flume were both included in the video, frolicking and doing strangely suggestive acts. In hungry boy Vance Joy’s case, that meant slowly eating a doughnut.

We caught up with Vance Joy (aka James Keogh) days before he embarked on a massive international tour, which brings him back to Australia in September. However, it was our pressing journalistic responsibility to ask: Yeah, how’d you get to be one of Charli’s "Boys"?

"We’re on the same record label, so I was doing a photo shoot, and one of the record label people that we work very closely with came in with a camera and kind-of was like, 'Okay, just eat this doughnut for the camera,'" he tells Student Edge.

"It was like a five-minute thing," he adds.

"I didn’t know if I was gonna end up being in it, but when I watched the clip, I was so happy to get a little gig, because there’s all these guys that I recognise, like Diplo playing with his shirt off with dogs.

"It’s just funny to even just make a little cameo. It was really a very last-minute addition to my day, doing photos, but it’s cool to be in that."
