I Have the Coolest Grandparent and Here’s Why

I marvel at my grandma's day-to-day life. In fact, I don't know of any other seventy-year-old women as busy as my grandma.

She loves helping others and is one of those people who finds it her duty to do so.

My grandma is a chef. She works in a kitchen all day long and once she gets home she puts all kinds of shortbread and muffins in the oven. The cooking never stops, but it sure does create some great smells in her house of freshly baked goods.

Along with being a chef working for a company in Scotland - which is probably one of the most demanding jobs out there (we all know how hungry and impatient human beings can get when they want their lunch) - she is also socially aware. She has set up her own separate cafe for old people in the community which she runs every Friday, so that the elderly locals can come together and socialise with a cup of tea and some of her special biscuits.

After a long week of cooking and baking she then heads down on an overnight train all the way from Scotland to London to look after my fragile great grandfather, her father. This is where my grandma spends the whole weekend.

She is extremely kind and caring and she looks after her dad with the upmost care, just as she does when she comes out to Australia all the way from the U.K. to look after us during the holidays. We bake together, and she has inspired me to create in the kitchen and taught me many valuable lessons I still use today.

Not only is my grandma the busiest seventy-year-old I know, she is the only seventy-year-old I know that can do push-ups and some other pretty intense exercises. She was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis about eight years ago and in order to keep her joints mobile and strong she does lots of exercises. She takes very good care of her health. Although sometimes we worry she works too hard, grandma is content with calling it "helping."
