How to Watch "Years and Years" In Australia

The future is (basically) now!

If you watch Black Mirror and think to yourself, "Now there’s an optimistic view of the future, and I can’t wait to live in it!" perhaps we can interest you in the new dystopia of Years and Years instead.

The show comes from Russell T. Davies, who has worked on everything from Queer as Folk to Doctor Who and, recently, A Very English Scandal. It imagines what might happen over the next 15 years in Britain, following the political ascent of a controversial Trumpian businesswoman, only played by bleedin’ Emma Thompson, maybe you’ve heard of her?

In particular, we see how a family in Manchester is particularly rocked by her rise, as well as the technological and cultural revolutions that change modern (and future) Britain. And given, ahem, everything that’s going on in ol’ Blighty at the moment, it’s probably a decent prediction of what’s to come.

From the looks of it, Years and Years has a lot in common with that other British show about our near-future, Black Mirror, though instead of tackling a new story with each episode, as Black Mirror does, Years and Years appears to dig in (and go deeper and darker) over its six eps.

The miniseries debuted on the BBC in the UK back in May before arriving in the US on HBO. It received rapturous reviews, and why wouldn’t it, considering it secured the talents of such actors as Thompson, Jessica Hynes (from Spaced), Russell Tovey and Rory Kinnear (a Black Mirror all-star!).

The wait for Australians ends on Wednesday 6 November, when the series debuts on SBS Australia.

It all begins with a double-episode drop on 6 November at 8:30pm. New eps follow each week at 9:30pm on Wednesdays. Episodes will be available to stream after their airing on SBS On Demand. (It’ll also be subtitled in Chinese and Arabic.)
