Harry Styles' "Watermelon Sugar" Is the Song That Was Promised

Okay, we’ll concede: Harry wins.

A few years ago, we, ahem, semi-confidently declared Zayn Malik the ultimate victor of the solo One Directioners, having been underwhelmed by Harry Styles’ first album.

And then, Malik’s next effort flopped so hard he left a power vacuum, into which Styles has proudly strolled.

We loved his most recent single "Lights Up", and its polyamorous music video. But he really riled up the fans with a follow-up tweet suggesting his next tune would build on his fan fave "Kiwi".

It quickly emerged that the title "Watermelon Sugar" was a veiled reference to Harry’s ex Camille Rowe (she apparently loves Richard Brautigan’s book In Watermelon Sugar). Some were then disappointed that "Watermelon Sugar" wasn’t going to be another pansexual anthem for the Styles Hive, but nonetheless expected it to be a sultry, filthy, lusty little banger.

And, yeah, it is.

So, with apologies to Zayn, Niall, Liam and the other one, we officially declare a new 1D Winner: Harry.

His next album, Fine Line, lands 13 December.
